Small Business PR Story Ideas for Early 2021

The stories you have to tell are powerful. If you’re an ethical business they’re likely to be inspiring and moving!

Being able to adapt to the season and current trends makes your story all that much more intriguing and relevant to the press. It fits into what they’re looking for and are more likely to get picked up as a result.

If you’re new to PR, you can get started by brainstorming come story ideas for the month ahead — campaigns and awareness days are ideal for this. Here are some ideas for how you can choose an effective angle (or hook), no matter the kind of media coverage you’re hoping to land.

It’s a great time to pitch story ideas to the weekly, fortnightly, online and broadcast media now for February onwards. Monthly print publications plan 3–6 months ahead, so consider that when you’re planning your PR.

St David’s Day, International Women’s Day, World Book Day, Mother’s Day, St Patrick’s Day, Passover, British summertime begins, Global Recycling Day, Holi.

Lockdown Roadmap (England only)* Stage One…

March 8th — schools reopen. Two people can sit together outside. Care home residents can see one regular visitor.

From 29 March — Outdoor gatherings of either six people or two households will be allowed in private gardens. Outdoor sports facilities will reopen along with organised adult and children’s sport. Travel outside your local area.


Ramadan, Easter, St George’s Day, Queen’s birthday, World Autism Awareness Day, Earth Day.

Lockdown Roadmap Stage Two…

12 April — shops, hairdressers, gyms and outdoor hospitality reopen. Self-contained holiday accommodation can be used. Indoor leisure opens (gyms, pools, etc).


May Day, Spring bank holiday, Star Wars Day, World Bee Day, Africa Day, National Children’s Day, Eid-el-Fitr.

Lockdown Roadmap Stage Three…

17 May — two households could mix in homes, while the rule of six applies in places like pubs. Most outdoor social contact rules end. Indoor hospitality opens.


Global Day of Parents, World Environment Day, World Bloody Donor Day, Pride, Autistic Pride Day, World Refugee Day, Father’s Day, Summer Solstice, UK Windrush Day

Lockdown Roadmap Stage Four…

All social restrictions lifted and opening of all remaining areas of society.
